Wiroa Island, which is also known as Kohia, is an island that is south to the airfields of Auckland Airport. This island serves many purposes to Auckland Airport, one of which is a Live Fire Training Ground where firefighters trained on simulators and performed many fire training exercises.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemical compounds used a few years ago for firefighting, anything that encounters it can be contaminated with many health risks to associated with it.
Auckland Airport has not used this land for live fire training for quite some time and they have investigated how they can reintroduce it.
They have approached Cuesko to perform cost estimates to reduce the contamination of the earth as well as construction new fire training facilities.
The project consists of ground remediation by capping the contaminated earth layer, new civils and infrastructure, setting up a new firefighting simulator, fire training centre and compartment fire trainer.
